haulsnothing yet. 2018 Ram 2500 Cummins and two KTM 300s riding in the bed

i posted in the Momentum thread and got sent here, which is fair.

i am in Boise, i have a 2018 Ram 2500 Cummins and two KTM 300s that ride in the bed now. the plan is a fifth wheel toy hauler and a Honda Talon 1000X so my wife will come along. i have never owned an RV of any kind.

the one i am looking at is a 2020 Heartland Cyclone 4007 on the conaway's listing pages, bank repo, sitting on a lender lot in Nevada. one of the photos is the yellow sticker by the entry door. it says the cargo carrying capacity is 3,214 lbs. somewhere else in the photos is a sticker in the garage that gives a number for the garage floor.

what i do not understand is how those two numbers relate. if the garage floor can hold more than the trailer's cargo capacity, which one am i supposed to believe? and what counts as cargo, does water count, does gas in the onboard tank count?

i do not want to bid on a trailer that cannot carry what i bought it to carry. conaways says the bids are binding, so i cannot change my mind after.

hauls2016 Heartland Cyclone 4005 (shop project) behind a 2017 F-350, a Honda Pioneer 1000 to deer camp

good question and you are asking it at the right time.

the yellow label is the one that matters for the whole trailer. it was filled in at the factory when the trailer was built: the weight of that trailer as it left the plant, and the cargo carrying capacity, which is the GVWR minus that weight. everything you put in it comes out of the CCC. clothes, food, pots, the Talon, the KTMs, the fuel in the onboard tank, and the water in the fresh tank. the label also tells you what a full fresh tank weighs, so you can see how much of the CCC water eats.

the garage floor number is about the floor. it tells you the floor will not break. it says nothing about whether the axles, tires and frame are ok with everything else you loaded.

two repo specific things. a trailer that has been owned for five years may have stuff added that is not on the label. solar, a second battery bank, a washer and dryer, a bigger generator. all of that came out of the CCC after the sticker was printed. and the sticker is from 2020, so it does not know what the last owner bolted on.

hauls2020 Jayco Seismic 4113 behind a 2020 F-450, Can-Am Defender HD10

for the fuel, figure about six pounds a gallon for gas. our Seismic has a 50 gallon tank, so full is about 300 lbs. a 30 gallon tank is about 180. people forget it because it is not something you load, it is just there.

and water is 8.3 pounds a gallon. a 100 gallon fresh tank full is over 800 lbs. we travel with maybe a quarter tank and fill at camp when we can.

hauls2021 Grand Design Momentum 395MS behind a 2020 Ram 3500 Cummins, two RZRs

from my own scale tickets on the Momentum: loaded with two RZRs and a full fuel tank, axles plus pin came to 18,090. that was inside the GVWR on my sticker with about 1,100 lbs to spare, but that is with an empty fresh tank and not much in the cupboards yet.

tip from the bidding side. if the yellow sticker is not in the photo set, ask for it before you bid. i emailed the conaway auction for my sticker photo and got it with the hour meter photo two days later. it is the one picture i would not bid without.

hauls2022 Forest River XLR Nitro 351 behind a 2019 F-350 6.7, Can-Am Maverick X3

my numbers for the Nitro 351, for comparison. the yellow label CCC on mine is in the high 3,000s. the X3 is around 1,600 lbs with fuel, gear and the cooler. a quarter tank of water and full gas brings it up near 2,100. clothes, food and the rest for two retirees who pack too much is maybe 600 more. so about 2,700 out of the CCC with room left.

the one i almost bid on before, the Seismic, had a bigger CCC on paper. the conaway's photo set showed a washer and dryer that i am fairly sure were added after it was built. dale's point about stuff bolted on after the sticker is real.

haulsnothing yet. 2018 Ram 2500 Cummins and two KTM 300s riding in the bed

update. i did the math on the Cyclone, using everything from this thread:

  • CCC on the label: 3,214
  • Talon 1000X with fuel and a little gear: about 1,600
  • both KTMs: about 470
  • gas in the onboard tank, full: about 180
  • quarter tank of fresh water: about 210
  • food, clothes, tools, chairs, my wife's stuff, my stuff: 500 if we are careful, and we are not

that is 2,960, and the trailer is from 2020 and the listing photos show a washer and dryer and two extra batteries that may or may not be on the sticker. so maybe 250 to spare, maybe less.

i did not bid. it would have carried everything on a good day, but i would be weighing every load. i am watching a newer one with a bigger CCC. this time i asked for the sticker photo first.
